Why Hydration Is the Missing Piece in Gut Health
Your digestive enzymes can't work without proper hydration. Discover why water and electrolytes are the gut health foundation nobody talks about.

I'm going to say something that no other gut health brand is saying: if you're not properly hydrated, nothing else you're doing for your gut is working as well as it should.
Not your probiotic. Not your enzymes. Not your carefully planned diet. None of it.
Hydration is the foundation that every other digestive process is built on, and it's the one that almost everyone overlooks. In nine years of clinic, fixing hydration was often the single change that made everything else start working.
Why your gut needs more than "just water"
Every digestive process in your body requires water. Your stomach needs it to produce hydrochloric acid. Your pancreas needs it to produce digestive enzymes. Your intestines need it to move food through at the right pace. Your gut lining, a mucous membrane needs it to maintain its protective barrier.
When you're dehydrated, all of these processes slow down or become less effective. Stomach acid production drops, so food isn't broken down properly. Enzyme activity decreases. Gut motility slows, leading to constipation. The mucosal barrier thins, making you more vulnerable to irritation and inflammation.
The problem is that "drink more water" isn't the full answer. You can drink two litres a day and still be functionally dehydrated if your body isn't absorbing and retaining that water at a cellular level.
The electrolyte piece nobody mentions
Your cells don't just passively absorb water. They use a process called osmosis, which depends on the balance of minerals - electrolytes on either side of the cell membrane. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and other minerals create the gradient that pulls water into your cells.
Without adequate electrolytes, water passes through your body without being properly absorbed. You drink it, you excrete it, and your cells remain under-hydrated. This is why you can drink plenty of water and still have dry skin, headaches, fatigue, and constipation.
Women are particularly vulnerable to electrolyte imbalances. Hormonal fluctuations during your menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause all affect how your body handles water and minerals. Stress depletes magnesium. Caffeine increases mineral excretion. Even a healthy diet can fall short of the electrolytes your body needs if you're active, stressed, or going through hormonal changes.
What dehydration actually does to your digestion
The effects are more far-reaching than most people realise:
Reduced stomach acid. Your stomach needs water to produce hydrochloric acid. Low stomach acid means food isn't properly broken down, leading to bloating, reflux, and poor nutrient absorption. This is one of the most common issues I saw in clinic and one of the most overlooked.
Sluggish enzymes. Digestive enzymes are proteins that function in a water-based environment. Dehydration reduces their effectiveness. If you're taking enzyme supplements but not hydrating properly, you're not getting their full benefit.
Slow motility. Your colon reabsorbs water from food waste as it passes through. When you're dehydrated, your body pulls more water from your stool, leading to harder, slower-moving waste. That's constipation and it's one of the most common symptoms of chronic mild dehydration.
Compromised gut barrier. Your gut lining is protected by a layer of mucus that depends on adequate hydration. When that layer thins, you're more susceptible to irritation, inflammation, and the passage of partially digested food particles into the bloodstream what's sometimes called "leaky gut."
Impaired microbiome. Your gut bacteria thrive in a well-hydrated environment. Dehydration changes the pH and consistency of the gut environment, which can shift the balance of your microbiome away from beneficial species.
Signs you might be functionally dehydrated
You don't need to be visibly thirsty to be dehydrated. In fact, by the time you feel thirsty, you're already significantly depleted. More subtle signs include:
- Afternoon fatigue or brain fog (especially the 3pm crash)
- Headaches that aren't explained by other causes
- Dry skin despite using moisturiser
- Constipation despite eating adequate fibre
- Muscle cramps or stiffness, particularly at night
- Feeling bloated despite drinking plenty of water
- Dark urine or infrequent urination
If several of these sound familiar, your hydration might be the missing piece not just how much you're drinking, but how well your body is absorbing it.
What proper hydration looks like
It's not complicated, but it is different from "just drink eight glasses."
Electrolytes daily. A balanced blend of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium ensures your cells can actually absorb and retain water. This doesn't need to be a sports drink full of sugar and artificial colours, it can be a clean, simple formula dissolved in water.
Consistent intake. Sipping throughout the day is more effective than gulping large amounts at once. Your body can only absorb a certain amount of water per hour.
First thing in the morning. You wake up dehydrated after 7-8 hours without water. Starting the day with electrolyte-enhanced water gives your digestive system a head start.
With meals, A small glass of water with meals supports digestion. Flooding your stomach with water during meals can dilute stomach acid but small sips during a meal are fine.
Why I made electrolytes one of the three fromel products
When I designed the fromel range, some people questioned why a gut health brand would include electrolytes. Probiotics and enzymes they understood. Electrolytes seemed like a fitness product.
But electrolytes aren't just for athletes. They're the foundation your gut needs to do everything else. Your enzymes can't work without adequate hydration. Your probiotics can't colonise properly in a dehydrated gut. Your gut lining can't maintain its barrier without water.
The fromel electrolyte formula includes pink Himalayan salt, magnesium citrate, potassium chloride, zinc citrate, and high-dose vitamins B12 and C because hydration is about more than just water and salt. It's naturally flavoured with because if it doesn't taste good enough to drink every day, consistency falls apart. And consistency is what makes this work.
If colour free - why? because let’s face it you're not a child, and your supplements shouldn't look like a bottle of sugary squash
